The Election Of A Child

THE ELECTION OF A CHILD

Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.  Romans 9:7b

Whom God elects, He draws to Himself.  He makes them His own and ownership means the full authority to do whatever He wants with His children.

Abraham was called.  Isaac was called.  And once Isaac was named as the next in line for the promise, Abraham was accountable to God for the life of his son.  When God spoke to Abraham and told him to take Isaac up the mountain and offer him up as a sacrifice, Abraham obeyed.  He obeyed because God is God, but I suspect he also obeyed because Isaac belonged to God, not him.  God had elected him before his conception.  Nowhere was there a recorded conversation between Abraham and God where Abraham raged, “How dare you do this to my son!”

As a mother, there is nothing, absolutely nothing, more painful than seeing your child suffer.  And how they do.  They are often hurt at the hands of bullies, betrayed by best friends, overlooked by someone who appeared to have the keys to their dreams, and even violated sexually by someone everyone in the family trusted.  When that happens, a parent can back up from God and cry out, “How dare you let this happen!”

Just as Abraham trusted God, by faith, that the tragic plotline He seemed to be weaving for his son would have a redemptive end, we must do the same.  It doesn’t mean there won’t be tears, but tears will be mixed with faith and trust.

God provided a lamb and Isaac lived to marry and produce the next in line for God’s election.  Jacob.  If your child is in an impossible place with no seeming way out, know that your child is in good hands.  God has a firm grip, and a sovereign one.  He will provide a lamb but not without our prayers, our fasting, and our tears.  Through it all – He understands when we have our hands on the hem of His garment, when we cry out with tears of joyful expectancy.  You know we can because they do not belong to me.

Oh, how many children appear to be stuck in some tragic plot; one that never seems to progress toward the light.  Pour grace over the shoulders of each of us who are parents.  Grace to believe.  Grace to pray with expectancy for the Lamb to arrive.  Amen

  1. Thank you! for the first time in my childrens adult lives I am unable to help financially. I believed God blessed me financially to help those in need, especially my children. Then my husband asked me to leave our home and financially I continued to help my son and his family even though I went without. Sacrifice for my child, God’s gift to me. But, now I get it! I cannot provide help now financially and I need to teach my son and his wife more about God’s provisions and less about mine! Why would I ever want to learn this myself without gifting my son and his family with the same knowledge. Praise the Lord.
