LIFE WITHOUT A MIRROR
For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression. Romans 4:15
When I come into contact with the law, I become of aware of what sin is. I learn what is right and what is wrong. Without exposure to it, I am like a child who has had poor parenting. The neighbors say of his poor manners and bad behavior, “Poor kid. He doesn’t know any better.”
God said it another way. “My people perish for lack of knowledge.” Hosea 4:6 We are really seeing this play out in our world. Most everyone wants to live by their own truth, whatever feels right. They follow their heart (and the heart is deceitful and desperately wicked) and are devastated when life begins to fall apart. The serpent has lied to the human race and convinced them, since the Garden of Eden, that we are capable of thinking like God and deciding what is good and what is evil. Left to our own rudder, which is really his rudder, we live shipwrecked lives.
Marriages are hanging on by a thread as each partner tries to figure out how to make things work. Without the Word, there is no real insight. Without the healing love of the Physician, there is no cure for the pain of intimate relationships out of sync with God.
The relationship between children and parents has deteriorated. Lawlessness and disrespect are in our face. So many kids live like orphans and are doing the best they can to care for themselves. Without the Word, they have no rudder. Without the transforming power of the cross, they have no access to victory over the lure of sin.
We need the law to show us what’s wrong. We need Christ to forgive us and empower us to live God’s way. If I languish today in a wilderness of confusion and torment, I know that my only cure is much time in the Word and in prayer. Clarity will not be found any other way. The mirror of the Scriptures waits to show me where my face is dirty and how to be cleansed and focused in a new direction.
Without the law, I won’t know where I’ve sinned. Without the law, I won’t know how to make decisions about things which leave people stumped. Make me wise and discerning, Lord. Amen
