Even In This? Especially In This!

EVEN IN THIS?  ESPECIALLY IN THIS!

Each one of you should know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter.  I Thess. 4:4-6

What happens behind closed doors, in the privacy of one’s home, is often appalling.  While ministering to a group of eight hundred Christian women recently, I was reminded again of the desperate need within families, even Christian families.  The stories of abuse, incest, and neglect were rampant.  The days following the event, I cried out to God on behalf of His people.  The pain inflicted in the area of sexuality can be so severe.  What can often appear to others to be a solid Christian home is anything but that once night falls and the bedroom doors are closed.

People will abuse the ones they say they love.  A man or woman will love each other well in most other areas of life but then fail, in this area, to honor that same person.  To reign in a sexual appetite and conform it to Christlikeness seems to be the most difficult of all disciplines.  To do so in daylight can be fairly easy.  One appears righteous, even to himself.  To do so at night when defenses are down and needs arise takes far more restraint.  But know this; one’s Christianity is truly revealed when he (or she) is poised at their greatest point of need.

I am writing this at 2 a.m., aware that in many households, many spouses are sitting at their computer indulging in pornography.  They have bitten into the apple of deception that their addictions don’t hurt anyone, that they can stop anytime they want to, and that the person on the screen actually desires them.  All three are lies and only eat away at a marriage like a malignant cancer.  Who is succumbing to the lies of the serpent?  Perhaps you’d be shocked to know that it’s often pastors and Sunday School teachers.  We live in perilous times, in want of holiness.

How I treat a child, alone in his bed during a time when he is completely vulnerable, and how I treat my spouse once the lights go off, reveals everything about me.  Does ‘honoring’ them as Christ honors them characterize, not only my behavior, but my desires?  Oh, that we would submit ourselves, even our sexuality, to the lordship of Christ.

Perversion begins in the mind.  Empower your people to fight valiantly on the battlefield and stomp on the serpent’s head.  Purify Your church, Lord.  In Jesus’ name, Amen
