CHOOSE AND DON’T LOOK BACK
I hate the double minded, but I love your law. Psalm 119:113
I could study the subject of double mindedness for a long time in scripture. There’s enough there to keep me busy for several weeks. James talks about it. John reveals God’s words about it in Revelation when He describes the church at Laodicea. I am pulled up short when I remember that God promises wisdom to each of His children but I will never get my hands around it if I am double minded; one side bent toward the kingdom and the other attached to this world and its mindset. My life will be marked by instability.
Until I am Spirit-led through and through, I show signs of double mindedness. Jesus said, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:62 When Jesus came, He announced to His world, “The kingdom is here, now.” He brought with that announcement the realization that there are two kingdoms, His kingdom and the anti-kingdom, and each of us must choose which side we’re on. Once chosen, we step into that kingdom, live in it, and fight for it.
Double mindedness is to pledge allegiance to the kingdom of God, live in it, but at various times of the day and night, sneak out to promote the other kingdom. It’s mutiny. When put like this, I’m appalled and I deny ever doing such a thing. But, here are some signs that reveal the hard truth.
§ Do I sound one way when I pray and another when I talk?
§ Do I talk about faith and trust but live in paralyzing fear?
§ Do I sing about glorifying God but then live to promote myself?
§ Do I say God is most important but then make a hundred daily choices which prove just the opposite?
Perhaps the church is void of prayer warriors because we’ve lost sight of what it is we’re fighting for. Our appetites are so polluted with the world that we’ve got one foot inside the kingdom gate and the other in the world Jesus said to leave. I take stock this morning and preach to my own soul. “Pick one and stick with it, by God’s grace.”
Help me listen to myself talk. Help me really watch myself make choices today. Show me where I’m double minded. Amen
I’m with Susan. The questions you ask at the end, Christine, are more than thought provoking. They cut right through to my heart without the benefit of anesthesia. Not always pleasant to feel or to see what’s inside as a result, but necessary if true, sincere changes are to be made. Thank you for not holding back or tip-toeing around God’s truths, Christine.
So rich and delicious! Thank you, Christine, for sharing this as I struggle minute by minute with living in God’s kingdom. I love the Truth of God’s ways.

Christine,
Thank you, as always, for speaking the truth! Even though it probes deep into our hearts and convicts us, it is good “medicine”. I am reminded of how Paul, in II Timothy, talks about the Word being profitable for “…teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness”.
Thank you for being faithful to teach the Word without compromise!
Susan
