SEEING OTHERS OFFEND GOD
I look at the faithless with disgust, because they do not keep your commands. Psalm 119:158
Those who fail to keep God’s commands do more damage to the kingdom than just offend God. They cooperate with Satan and promote his kingdom. They affect others adversely and, at times, lure the weak to join them in their crimes against a holy God.
David does not speak of a child of God here who struggles with his flesh, gives into sin, and then feels remorse and confesses. The word ‘faithless’ means ‘traitorous’. This particular sinner does not care in the least about God and gives no thought about whether his actions will hurt Him. He’s completely self-centered and reckless to live his life the way he wants.
Is there room for a Christian to feel angry over an unbeliever who, without any remorse, sins repeatedly against God? Yes. I don’t say under my breath, “You idiot. I’d never do that!” Oh, but for the grace of God, I’d do the same thing. My anger is in defense of a God who loves so greatly, who sacrificed so much to save them from their sin, the sin that kills and condemns them eternally. Yet, they spurn it, sin recklessly, and give no thought to a heartbroken Creator. For that, I should be upset and defend the heart of a God I love.
When I hear your name taken in vain, I cringe, and say under my breath, ‘God, I heard that. I’m so very sorry.’ When I see others sin without conscience, I am angry, then hurt for you. I reach out in prayer to console you lest you are having a moment when you’re sorry you made men. Amen
