A WALKING CONTRADICTION
Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are you looking for an opportunity to kill me? John 7:19
The Pharisees had been criticizing Jesus for healing on the Sabbath and other issues as well. They did not recognize Him as the Son of God and in their blindness, rose up to pass judgment. They thought way too highly of themselves. Jesus points out here that they are a contradiction. He tells them that they love to quote Moses and the prophets and yet they don’t keep the law that Moses passed down to them.
This had to be an eye-opener. What law of Moses were they breaking? “Thou shalt not kill.” At every turn, they were plotting to kill Jesus. He knew that and their hypocrisy was clearly evident.
Scripture has a lot to say about passing judgment on others when I have not taken the time to take care of the log in my own eye. When I stand on a soapbox to wag a finger about someone else but am guilty myself for same sin, I am a walking contradiction. Oftentimes, what I despise most in others is my own blind spot.
Is there any ground for an unbeliever to say of me today, “You may say that you love the Bible but ironically, you’re the one breaking it every day when you do ‘this’. May it not be.
The point is not to be perfect, but to be one who gives a good-faith effort toward being like Jesus. When I fail, I need to see my sin, apologize where it is called for, then live before Jesus with a tender heart about my offenses.
Show me if I’m in any way like the Pharisees. Amen
