His Love and His Presence

HIS LOVE AND HIS PRESENCE

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Romans 8:39

The love of a husband or wife, the love of a child or dearest friend are powerful forces.  When we’re in trouble, they’ll come.  When we’re sick, they’ll sit with us.  When we’re in danger, they go with us if they can.  But because they’re human, there are limits to where they can go.

When I’m going in for life-threatening surgery, they must leave me at the door and wait in the waiting room.  When my soul is hurting, there comes a point of separation.  They must sleep, go to work, attend to their own lives, and if it’s a friend, they must go home.  While their love is powerful and appreciated, their presence is limited.

There is no place on earth or in heaven I could go that God is not with me.  He loves me, He’s with me, and He’s more powerful than the forces of evil and of nature.  He made it all.

When Jonah was swallowed up by a great fish and spent three days in the belly of a big fish, God was right there with him.  No friend could have done that.  When Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, God was right there with him.  When he faced the dangers of re-entry back into our atmosphere, and could have easily bounced off and headed forever into space, God would have gone with him there too.

The people nearest to my heart promise me their prayers and their love no matter what.  I am deeply moved by that and rely on it.  But how much more am I moved by God’s promise of love, the assurance of His prayers, and the comfort of His presence?  No surgery room keeps Him out.  No maximum security prison locks Him out.  If I travel to the remotest part of our planet, He is there too.  Feeling alone is always an illusion.

The greatest way to combat loneliness is to nurture my relationship with You in prayer and meditation and ask daily, “Show me your glory and make me more sensitive to Your presence.”  Amen
